The high cost of cheap translation

It certainly feels good to make a good bargain but if you ask for price quotes from different translation agencies when evaluating them you should take into consideration other aspects as well.

What is true in other industries, can be true in the world of translation and localization as well: you always need to pay more for good quality. If the translation fee is unreasonably low, it may have its effect on the output (an unprofessional or unqualified "translator" can make serious mistakes). And this can cost you much more than the money you saved on translation.

An example from our experience…

One of our clients asked us to proofread a technical text (translated by someone else) because they were not satisfied with its quality. They paid the proofreading fee, and then (when it turned out that the translation was of very poor quality, certain parts were superfluous, others untranslated) they paid the translation and proofreading fee for the missing parts of the text. In total, this cost them way much more than the original low-bargain translation.
